Why conversations die after three messages
The flat middle is where most matches disappear. Here is how to get through it.
The pattern
Opener lands, two friendly exchanges happen, then someone asks what do you do for fun and the whole thing quietly ends. It is the most common shape of a dead match.
Small talk has a shelf life
Generic questions produce generic answers, and generic answers give you nothing to build on. After two of them the conversation has no material left.
Change the format, not the effort
- Swap a question for a statement they can push back on
- Offer a choice instead of an open field
- Bring back an earlier detail they already cared about
- Suggest meeting while there is still energy
