How to answer "what are you looking for?"
This question is a filter, and it deserves a straight answer. Vagueness here is the thing that wastes months later.
You can be honest and still be warm.
Why people ask it
They want to know whether your goals overlap before they invest. That is reasonable, whichever answer you give.
You are also allowed to be genuinely unsure — say that, rather than picking whichever answer you think they want.
What you can say
- 1State your actual answer in one sentence.
- 2Add what you are open to, if anything.
- 3Ask them the same question back.
Example messages
Something serious, honestly — I'd rather date properly than collect chats. What about you?
Nothing heavy right now, but I'm not here for anything dishonest either. Where are you at?
Genuinely open. I'd rather meet someone I like and see what it becomes. You?
What to avoid
- ✕Saying what you think they want to hear.
- ✕Answering with "see where it goes" when you know exactly what you want.
When to leave the conversation alone
If your answers do not match, say so kindly and end it early. Trying to change someone's goals is not a plan.
