Openers

First messages that actually get answered

Stop sending hey. Start with something only you could have written to them.

A good opener does one job: make replying easy and a little bit fun. It does not need to be clever, and it definitely does not need to be a pickup line.

The pattern that works almost everywhere is simple — notice something specific, add a light opinion, leave an easy door open.

Why hey does not work

A one-word message asks the other person to do all the work of starting a conversation. Most people will not, not because they are rude but because there is nothing to answer.

The three-part opener

Almost every opener that gets a reply has the same bones.

  • Notice — one concrete detail from their profile
  • Angle — your take, guess or joke about it
  • Door — a question or a hook that is easy to answer

Match the app you are on

Tinder rewards short and playful. Hinge gives you a prompt to react to, so use it. Bumble often means she opens, so your job is to answer with more than one word.

Things to skip

A few openers reliably kill the chat before it starts.

  • Comments about their body
  • Copy-paste lines they have obviously seen before
  • Long paragraphs on the very first message
  • Anything negative about dating apps

Examples

Opener examples

Written as examples. Your real suggestions come from your own conversation.

Photo-based

You are either a very committed hiker or you own one very convincing jacket. I need to know which.

Coach note

Playful guess that is easy to correct, which is the easiest reply of all.

Prompt-based

Bold of you to claim the best pasta in town without naming the place. I'm going to need evidence.

Coach note

Turns their own prompt into a small friendly challenge.

Low-key warm

Two dog photos and a bookshelf. Statistically we are going to get along.

Coach note

Warm, light, no pressure, and very easy to answer.

Questions

Good to know

One or two sentences. Long enough to show you read their profile, short enough to answer in ten seconds.

Never get stuck on what to say again.

Paste your chat, pick a tone, send the line that sounds like you.
