How to ask someone out, clearly and safely.
A good invitation has three parts: what, when, and an easy way out. The last part is what makes it comfortable to say yes to.
When to ask
Once you have had a proper exchange and the interest goes both ways. Waiting for perfect timing usually means the chat goes stale first.
What you can say
- 1Suggest something specific and short — a drink, a coffee, a walk.
- 2Offer a day or two to choose from.
- 3Say clearly that no is a fine answer.
- 4For a first meeting, pick somewhere public, tell a friend where you are going, and arrange your own way home.
Example messages
I'd like to take you for a drink. Thursday or Saturday? No pressure if neither works.
Coffee on Sunday, somewhere central? Happy to pick if you'd rather not decide.
This is more fun in person. Free one evening this week? If you're not up for it, no hard feelings.
What to avoid
- ✕"We should hang out sometime" with no plan.
- ✕Pressuring after a no, or asking again immediately.
- ✕Insisting on a private location for a first meeting.
When to leave the conversation alone
If the answer is no, or a clear non-answer twice, that is the end of the ask. One gracious message and you are done.
