What makes a good first message.
A good first message is easy to answer. That is the whole standard. Clever is optional, specific is not.
The three parts of a first message
Something you noticed, something you think about it, and something for them to respond to. Miss the third and you have written a statement.
Length matters less than direction — two good lines beat a paragraph.
What you can say
- 1Reference a detail only their profile could produce.
- 2Give an opinion they can agree with or argue against.
- 3Ask one question, not three.
- 4Match the app — Hinge gives you prompts, Tinder often gives you photos only.
Example messages
Anyone with a photo of a market stall that specific has a food recommendation. Hand it over.
You look like someone with strong opinions about airports. Am I right?
Your dog is clearly the main character here. What's the name?
Genuine question from your third photo: was that hike worth it or a mistake?
What to avoid
- ✕"Hey" on its own.
- ✕Comments about their body.
- ✕Copy-paste lines you did not write.
- ✕Asking them out before a single exchange.
When to leave the conversation alone
No reply is not a cue to send another message. Send a good first message to the next person instead.
