What to say when you're left on read.
Being left on read can mean many things, so avoid treating it as proof of what someone is thinking. Phones get put down, messages get opened in queues, and plenty of people read a text they intend to answer properly later.
If you choose to follow up, make the second message useful on its own. It should be worth replying to even if the first one is never answered.
What being left on read usually means
Most often it means the message did not need an answer, or it arrived at a bad moment and slid down the screen. Sometimes it does mean interest has faded. You cannot tell from one read receipt, and guessing out loud rarely goes well.
The useful question is not "why did they not reply" but "did my message give them something easy to respond to".
What you can say
- 1Bring in a new topic rather than referencing the silence.

- 3Send something relevant to them — a place, a show, a small update they would actually care about.
- 4Ask one easy question with a low bar for answering.

When to leave the conversation alone
If there is still no response after one good follow-up, leave the conversation there. A third message rarely changes the outcome and usually makes it harder for them to come back later.
Silence is an answer you are allowed to accept without an explanation.
